The American Mastiff is a molosser-type dog that was created over 20 years ago by crossing an English Mastiff and an Anatolian Mastiff dog, a very old mastiff breed known for its intelligence and lengthy lifespan for a large breed.
The Mastiff is a great powerful, muscular and massive dog. The Mastiff has a very large and heavy square head with a well marked stop between the eyes. They respond well to firm, but gentle, patient training. The muzzle should be half the length of the skull. The medium-sized brown to dark hazel eyes are set wide apart with a black mask around them. The nose is dark in color, ears are V-shaped and in part with the skull and are dark in color. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite but a slightly undershot bite is also acceptable in the show ring providing the teeth do not show when the mouth is closed. The tail is high-set with a wide base, tapering to a point reaching the hocks. Coat colors include light fawn, golden fawn, silver, tiger and brindle.
Dominance levels differ, even within the same litter, but they are often called a gentle massive. Its nature to defend their territory and family, and is more a silent guard rather than a barker. When an interloper is caught they are more likely to hold them at bay, either by trapping them in a corner or rather than and all out attack. We do not need to train them to guard. On any issue how friendly they are, if they sense danger they will naturally guard on their own unless the owners are there to tell them otherwise self-confident and watchful. The American Mastiffs love children and are totally devoted to their families. Dignity rather than gaiety; quiet, calm, loving, loyal and devoted. They should be protective, but not aggressive. They are neither shy nor vicious. This dog breed is not for everyone but, for the right owner and family, they are loving and loveable companions and are docile and gentle. They love to please and need a lot of human guidance.
